Nokia PC synch – WARNING!!!
Discussion
Bl**dy Nokia PC sync has just screwed up all my Outlook contacts. I don’t know what the hell’s happened but it has re-associated numbers from one contact with other contact names. E.g. contact A has the numbers and email addresses from contact B, contact name B has the contact details from contact C etc. etc. except it’s not linear so I can’t just shuffle all the number up one. It also seems to be completely random on just a few contacts. So now if I phone a contact I’m not sure if I’ll call that contact or someone else from my address book. IMO this even worse than loosing my contacts all together (I have nearly 400 names built up over 5 years).
The problems started when I set the contacts sync option to “sync names and phone numbers only” as opposed to all details and then selected the “ignore contact deletions on phone” option in the PC sync settings. I then deleted a load of contacts from the phone because they were email only with no numbers (no use on the phone then). The next sync it basically got its knickers in a complete twist. I could see the numbers shuffling round like a fruit machine as I had the Outlook contacts window up behind the sync window. Worst still there is no undo for this!
Fortunately I have a back up from Monday so I’ll restore the pst file and copy the contacts back across to outlook. I may even delete the phone memory and re-sync with the phone but I’m very wary of using this software now. I nearly had a panic attack when I thought I’d buggered up my address book until I remembered the back up. You don’t realise how much you rely on this stuff until it goes tits up.
So please be careful when using Nokia PC sync.
(I’m using a 6310i and PC Sync 1.2 over an IR port BTW).
