Rfactor - Help Needed!

Rfactor Special Edition '08 came yesterday. Great fun, but to just have Kubica racing Heidfeld wasn't the reason I bought it. Anyway, tried to download a few things from rfactor central - mainly F179 and 09 stuff - but had no idea what to do, and naturally when I downloaded Long Beach, had no idea where to put it.

So if anyone could help me with how to download and install certain things, it would be very much appreciated! Google searches came back with a bunch of random links that didn't help me at all...

Some mods are a .exe so they run a install program, others you need to manually place in the rfactor folder. This also goes for cars etc.

If you used the default install directory this is where you will find where you need to put the files.


c:\program files\rfactor\GameData\ -----> this is the main directory for all addons.

c:\program files\rfactor\GameData\Locations ------> this is the folder where you place your track files.

c:\program files\rfactor\GameData\Vehicles ------> this is the folder where you place your car files.

The tracks will usually come in a compressed form, they have to be decompressed into the rFactor/GameData/Locations folder.

The cars are also usually compressed, some decompress as an installer which you run and then it automatically installs the files for you. Because the directory structure has to be maintained (car data has to go in several different places sometimes) cars without installers usually have to be decompressed straight into the rFactor directory itself and the files get placed into the correct folders automatically.

If in doubt try decompressing the files into a directory that you create and look at the file structure and read any readme files that are included. Also don't forget to virus check the downloads before opening or running them.

You don't need all of them, many are just identical files on mirror sites.

You will need ONE of each of the following...

Grand Prix 1979 2.0 Install (Cars)
Grand Prix 1979 2.0 (Track Pack)
Grand Prix 1979 2.01 Patch

That should get you up and running.

If your DL speed is low, you will notice that the cars and tracks can be downloaded in 3 parts instead of a single DL if you wish.

The other files with track names I think are simply updated versions of tracks already in the track packs. Download those if you want the latest versions of those tracks. (Online often servers will run the latest versions and you will get an error if you don't have them).

Have fun with the 79's, they have quite a dedicated following on rFactor.

My tip is to drive the Ligier, it's fast and the handling is great.

You need the GP1979 cars ver 2.0 installer

Once you have installed those you need to patch to version 2.1

Rfactor is a bit confusing with the different folders and mods that dont give you any instructions on how to install.
But generally you just drop the tracks into the locations folder and the cars into the cars folder and it just works

I don't have a locations folder, although it could be under a different name.
And when I go to open the vehicle date one it comes up with a message saying Windows can't open it because it's unsure of the program. Is this normal? And if so, how do I change it?

Locations folder should be in the "Gamedata" folder.

I'm considering just giving up on this, it makes no sense to me whatsoever. I can't access the vehicles folder because Windows can't read it; I can't do anything with the GP79 cars for the same reason. There's no locations folder anywhere, but I can find the tracks somewhere in settings.

Every google search I try ends up directing me to other download links, whilst not answering my original question. I just don't understand where I'm going wrong, and why it isn't working...

You must be looking in the wrong place.

My install dirctory is in c:/games/rfactor/gamedata/locations

You should be able to open the folders to this point, just drop the tracks into this folder and rfactor will find them.

You do the same for the cars, c:/games/rfactor/gamedata/vehicles.

Its been a whlye since I installed GP79 so im not sure what format they supply the files in.
Its probably a zip or 7zip file that may already have the directory structure in place for you.. so you just point the extractor to c:/games or c:/rfactor and it will put the files in the correct place.

Another failed attempt at downloading the cars, but I think I know where I went wrong. Attempted to download the tracks, and... succeeded

Thanks for having the patience to put up with me! I'll have another shot at downloading the cars later on tonight, and whenever I see Depailler or Lafitte surge past me in those dark blue Ligier's, I'll think of you!
