Can employers request a doctors note if they don't believe that you are ill, even if it has only been 3 days?

If you've only been off for three days then you have no need to visit the doctor, for a sick note, so I would have thought not. They can ask but I don't think you have to comply.

Surely if they think he is swinging the lead they're entitled to ask for proof?

Its their trainset at the end of the day.

NHS sicknote pages

Not as far as I can tell - should be self-cert.

I would have thought it depends on your contract. We are asked for a doctors note if we take 2 days off.

Over here in Ze Fazerland it's 3 days, yes smile

But then, knowing the current "why should I have to go to work" culture in England at the moment it's probably 3 months + compensation + a free flat + a flatscreen television biggrin

It says in my contract, up to 5 days self cert and then a docs note for extended period.

I am having a few duvet days but would much rather be in work - back problems.

The reason they dont believe me is because I am working my notice at the moment.

Plotloss, I see your point, but if everybody who took a couple of days off had to see a quack then all quacks would do is fill in sick notes. This is not a great use of their time is it.

If you are on your notice period then tell them to shove it, bye the time they have gone through a full on disaplinery procedure you'll be long gone.

Precisely - I finish this Friday anyway!

I have loads of stuff to pick up though which is annoying.

You could just give your GP a call and have a telephone consultation if work is being a pain, I do this regulary but then I have been sick for over a year.

My wife has to produce a sick note even if she has one day off.
I think this is a requirement of her headteacher, rather than the LEA. As teachers get 6 months full pay sick leave, certain members of staff have taken it as a right to additional time off as and when it suited them.

Where I work there is no right to sick pay, it is at the discretion of the boss.

Yes, this may be the easiest way. To be quite honest with you, part of me wants to just stay off and stick two fingers up to them for being awkward with me.

The way they treated me since I handed in my notice wasn't exactly nice.

The fact is, its a 3 hour car journey to work and back and it's very uncomfortable on my back.

I can see why they wouldnt believe me.

I believe that any sickness under a week does not need a sicknote.
