Had a great weekend away with warm sunshine, loads of beer and good food and my new toy (50d) - by god do these cars move fast though!
Took about 1500 photo's most of which were pretty crap but I really got on with the camera and had some good results.
Link here to my flickr page - photo's are still currently uploading.
C&C most welcome

Finished the weekend by spending time on the aircraft talking to Martin Brundle and the Team Manager from Red Bull (Jonathan Wheatley) who must get bored s
tless of stupid questions from fans of the sport, but in fairness were both very pleasant and chatty.

Not really any blur, look a bit snapshot to be honest.

Thanks Scott.Scott
I agree and would have liked to have a much slower shutter speed but I was really struggling to get half decent results (practice panning I guess!). I was using anything from 1/320 up to 1/1000 - what would you suggest?
Photography is of course like golf - you have to practice in order to see the results!

How did you manage that? Did you have a paddock pass?

I'm just surprised they were using easyjet!
Most of the Brawn team, including Ross Brawn were on easyjet back too.

There is no set shutter speed as it depends on distance from subject, speed of subject, focal length, angle of attack and of course what look are you striving for?
I would say that for motion panning anything faster than 1/500 will give pretty dull results as you will nearly freeze the subject, I shot stuff as slow as 1/30 @ the FIA GT's the other w/e and although hit rate dips the ones which work look good.

Shutter speed will be dependent on the focal length to some extent. To get a bit of blur I'd say 1:1 to 2:1.
That is 100mm FL (in old money (24x36 film)) 1/50 to 1/100. But you might get some blurring of the car at that. A bit faster if you want just the background blurred.
I'll see if I have some examples.

So with a D-SLR that's ~150mm FL = 1/50 or 1/100 (so a shutter-speed of 1/3 to 2/3 of FL). I'd suggest you need to be good to achieve that consistently...my best are probably all at over 50% FL, agree with your comment about car-blur (which some like, I don't usually). That is 100mm FL (in old money (24x36 film)) 1/50 to 1/100. These two qualify at the 'quick' end of that scale, and give plenty of blur:-
1/125 @ 190mm

1/125 @ 160mm

And to break with the rule, if you've got the right conditions a 'quicker' shutter speed can still work for you:
1/160 @ 100mm

1/200 @ 70mm
