hi when i rev the car the revs stay high for a few seconds befor falling back to about 900rpm,the throtle cable and linkage are all fine i was told it could be the ideal speed valve so ive replaced it with a new one but its still the same,any help welcome

Have you checked there are no air leaks around the new control valve and if there's not you may need to check you'e brake servo hasn't rusted away like mine had!

It sounds like the throttle stop might need adjusting, it's quite a precise method used to set the throttle stop correctly although fairly simple to do, there was a thread on here a while ago about how to do it but I can't find the link to it just now, if you do a search for 2.9 diagnostics you shoud find it ok, good luck
