Speedometer Correction

Hi guys,

Simple question, but Obviously not for me.

Where would i take my car to have the speedometer reconfigured??

Its currently reading about 7-8mph above the actual speed at ALL speeds, and I would like to have it spot on.

Would a normal garage be able to sort it out? or would i have to take it somewhere specific?

Its always been out, having a 5% lower profile tyre has only put it out a little bit more, but it was stupidly far out to begin with.

If the speedo is electronically controlled you need a speedohealer (search for that on ebay or google).

I suspect though that its cable driven in which case I do not know of a product on the market to correct it...other than fitting the correct sized tyres.

i would also be intrested in finding somewhere that could sort this out as other halfs crappy saxo automatic speedo is out varios from 3-5mph .

the car is completly standard no bigger wheels etc am presuming its on a cable just wondering if it has stretched or something daft .

Do a web search on speedo repair. There are a couple of companies that re-calibrate speedos.

A speedo is allowed to read 10% over but never under the true road speed (with standard drivetrain).

So am i right in saying no one knows where i would take my car to have the speedo recalibrated?

Can't you do the simple maths as you go along?

I know mine is ~5mph out with my tire change, so i just drive accordingly; knowing i can go just over 30mph and be withing legal limits.

ETA:
Also, by the general trend i'm seeing by reading your posts, you driving at ~5mph less than the speed limit may not be a bad idea for your and others safety.

Do it yourself with a GPS and a letraset or some stickers to reposition the numbers on the dial.

Leave it 3 weeks, when your car is wrapped round the front of a 40-footer the speedo won't be important.

Depending on what sort of car it is you may be able to use software tools to alter the speedo reading, or get a different geared drive for the cable perhaps.

Just remember to get it adjusted as the tyres wear and then again when you fit new rubber

The cable driven speedo in your golf will have a cog on the end that spins another cog in the speedo, so changing that cog would affect the speed but I seriously doubt it would be worth the trouble.

As has been said, it's crap car that's not worth spending any money on (no offence). If you really can't do the maths as you drive along then why not buy a satnav or some other gps based speedo, or even put the proper wheels and tyres on. Maybe painting your callipers red will help?

I'd say stickers are your best solution, drive how you want mate just now how fast you are!
