Well, ntl have screwed up again and their DNS servers have been down since about 4 o'clock. So I'm sat here at home unable to do anything on the 'net. Until I have the bright idea of logging into our web server remotely, via IP address of course, and using win XP's remote desktop facility to open up IE and get my Pistoheads fix that way!

Handy alternate DNS servers for when NTL drop the ball would be 158.43.128.1 and 158.43.192.1 - UUWorldMCI's main resolving servers. Very well connected and I've never known 'em fail.

just use alternate DNS servers, like has been said.

Cheeky hint on how, is just WHOIS a domain, 99% of the nameservers listed will be public facing for queries

Okay.... as another pee'd off NTL customer, how do I use those numbers to get me back on line when NTL fall over again? (in about ten minutes probably!)

Right click on my network places - properties.
Right click on the NTL connection - properties.

Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the window - highlight and click on properties.

Change the DNS details at the bottom of the screen (WRITE DOWN WHAT IS THERE BEFORE YOU CHANGE IT! )

Alternatively, if you're feeling brave, leave the default ones there and click on advanced. Go to DNS tab and add the numbers listed in here instead

I'd have done that if I had any alternative addresses, but it was one of those catch-22 situations where I couldn't go looking for an alternative DNS without a working DNS. D'oh!

Made a note of some now for next time it happens

Not NTHells problem. I was actualy on a con call to the states when it went, lots of running around scratching heads.
