S3 with cosworth diff (what shafts are required?)
Discussion
Well after spending the last few yr's doing up the old girl its almost ready.
Problem i have is i bought a cosworth diff and shafts a while ago, diff went in fine, but the shafts that came with it are different lengths (one's shorter than the other) and the shafts are thicker than the standard ones as well as the CV's being bigger.
The original ones wont fit the diff as too small, and the one's that came with the diff are too big for my car.
Please can someone help me locate the right ones, or give me some advice.
Thanks

Sounds like you have the LSD with the 108mm flanges instead of the 100mm flanges off the non-LSD Diff. I have one of these diff's "in stock" too. The short output shafts from the LSD Diff are not interchangable with the shafts from the normal diff as the LSD internals offset mean the shafts are different lengths.
I gave up and fitted a non-LSD diff with 100mm flanges but would also be interested to know if there are driveshafts that have the 108mm inner CV joint that will fit the existing hub without further modification...

I have a 1990 2.9 S3 with a knocking (pretty sure it's a) driveshaft. I want to fit a limited slip differental (LSD) with the same or a higher ratio (i.e. faster road speed / rpm), anyway, and fix the driveshaft issue at the same time. So I need an LSD and driveshafts.
I have a 450mm long shaft on the rhs (flange face to flange face) with 100mm dia. flanges with 6 x 40 Torx bolts holding the shaft to the diff. and hub flanges. My questions to the wise ones out there are;
What car or combination of cars can I get an LSD and driveshafts from, that will fit straight into the beloved S3 ?
I've searched the forum but no-one seems to have answered this succinctly, as far as I can see. All advice gratefully received.
Also, is the easiest way to get the diff out to drop the carrier and diff. in one go, or just remove the diff., leaving the carrier in situ?
Thanks, from a V6 Addict.

Your best source of info if from the Sierra Owners Club site here... http://forum.fordsierraclub.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=...I have a 450mm long shaft on the rhs (flange face to flange face) with 100mm dia. flanges with 6 x 40 Torx bolts holding the shaft to the diff. and hub flanges. its in the Useful Links Wiki...
I did post an extract from what I found on there a while ago but cant find it at the minute...

as far as removal goes the rear carrier must be left on the diff as the four bolts can be accessed from below whereas the two bolts that fix it to the diff are not visible.

Thanks for your help Ketvrin.
From all that I have been able to read, it sounds as if;
a. The standard S3 diff is a 7.5 inch, but with 100 mm diameter flange drive shafts, whereas the 2WD Sierra Cosworth has the same diff but with 108 millimetre flanges .
b. One can fit either a 7.5 inch or 7 inch diff to the S3, so long as the flanges match the standard 100 mm drive shafts. I am assuming that the input flange will match the prop on either diff., and that the width of the diff (output flange to output flange) is the same in both cases.
c. The 7 inch diff from any Granada Cosworth will have the 100mm flanges, so will fit straight into an S 3.
d. The drive shafts from a Granada Cosworth will also fit straight in.
e. The S 3 diff has a ratio of 3.64/1, which is the same ratio as a Granada Cosworth.
Is all this correct?
If it is, I simply need to source a Granada Cosworth diff and shafts, and they will fit straight in?
Anyone else got any comments or suggestions?

Not long to go....
Complete with rear bracket and driveshafts.

Also a driveshaft here.
This is listed as a left hand driveshaft though I think the only difference is the thread LH/RH on the end of the driveshaft where it goes through the hub - confirm this for yourself etc but if you changed the end for the one you already have I think it would fit either side.

This looks OK but you need to have the number off the alloy tag to ID the ratio and if it is LSD or not... for that price I would want those support bricks in the photo as well...http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Granada-cosworth-diff-2-9-V6...
Caveat Emptor!
not sure about the new ones listed Chris - Diff end does not look like Lobro type ?

These are extracts I took from the SOC forum so I take no blame for the spelling...

And a way to ID a LSD off the car.
Hold the input flange with your hand (the bit where the propshaft bolts on)
With your other hand turn one of the output flanges (The bit where the driveshaft bolts onto, any one will do and it don't matter which way it turns)
Reguardless on whever its an LSD or not the opposite one WILL turn in the opposite direction
Now the test (remember to hold the input shaft still so it don't move), if it is easyish to turn the driveflange then its a normal diff
if it is bloody hard to turn (or even maybe impossible) then its an LSD
……………………….
These ratios were for the Granada/Scorpio, which uses the same diffs. The 94-98 model uses a different diff cover, but that can be exchanged.

2=4.27
I'm not 100% sure, but I think this should be the engine/diff combinations.

To answer my own question posed earlier in this topic; the 7.5" 3.64/1 lsd diff I obtained and fitted as a straight swap, came from a Granada Cosworth and had 100mm output flanges. I had the shafts from the same car, and the joints on the end fitted the S3's shafts. The Granada shafts are longer than the S's.
The knocking under power has gone, as one of the old shaft joints was worn.
Handling is not noticeably changed with an lsd.
Thanks to all for their help.
Jon.
