As discussed before, this recently happened to my S3:

We rapidly confirmed that the stretch of bumper visible in that shot should be held on by a (long since rusted) metal insert.

Now the question is, what holds the rest on? Is that insert supposed to run through the whole of the rubber section (as it curves towards the wheel arch) or is the fixing method different further back?

Basically I'm thinking about taking the car down to my dad's workshop over the weekend where we've got all the kit to do the job properly rather than bodging it up here in London. Is it likely I can remove the rubber section in one piece and without doing any damage to it or the car for the trip down?

PS If all else fails, does anyone know what the rubber section comes from and how easy it'd be to get another? hehe

On mine there wer two metal strips one at the side one at the front. The rubber is very flexible and easily wraps around the corner without any metal inside the corner. If you want to replace with new I think you will find the rubber D section is the same as used on boats as bummpers around the sides of the hull, so anyone who supplies the boat builders etc should have some.

Thanks Tony.

I hope to get the second one off without incident (assuming its glued on like the front was), but if all else fails it's quite handy I'm planning to carry out the work back home by the sea. No shortage of marine supplies. wink
