I'm going to cover a football tournament this weekend so would appreciate any tips you can give. I've not done any sport before so any advice on settings or anything at all would be great.

As im just starting out I have the following

Nikon D40
18-55mm vr
55-200 non vr
Tripod
spare battery/cards

thanks

Just the obvious;
1. Make sure both batteries fully charged
2. Make sure all cards blanked and ready to go

For most of the matches I reckon you'll be at the 200mm end of your zoom to get a decent frame filling image. USe as high a shutter speed as you can to stop the movement. I would have the camera set in shutter speed priority at 1/250 or 1/500, matrix metering. I don;t know what focus modes the D40 has but when photogrpahing rugby I used continuous focus with a group of focus points rather than one individual focus point on the D2.

I believe a key to good sporting images is to know the game and be able to predict play so you are moving with the game not constantly trying to catch up after the ball has been kicked / passed etc.

best of luck

Chris

yeah I was looking at the 70-300 ealier but couldnt bring myslef to spend the £500 there and then. fingers crossed the range will be ok, its junior football so the pitches should be slightly smaller. thanks for the advice. I'll post a few up of how they come out.
