fast internet connection alternatives

you can get ADSL from many ISP other than using BT line you can get satalite internet but that still uses dialup for uploads
I switched from NTL cable to BT 6 months ago because of no cable at new house and to be honest there isnt much noticable difference in download speeds but uploads are twice as fast as cable uploads are 128 and adsl are 256.
I dont think BT are all that bad we are paying 22.99 a month and we have had no problem of outages in 6 months so cant be that bad

Wayne, did you say you CAN get ADSL on the Isle of Wight?, in that case, I wouldn't bother looking at anything else for price/speed. £25 per month gets you 512K down and 256K up, I've even seen 1024K down for < £30 (Bulldog, I think). Plus you don't need to go with BT directly (even though you will use the BT infrastructure).
Most people I know who have cable only get 128K down.

I have Telewest Blueyonder broadband with a cable modem. I was with BT as a broadband trialist when they were planning to role it out four years ago, but they were too expensive after the trial started. (BT gave me 2Mb down and 512 up with a router and an ethernet connection - no silly USB device and I had it on trial for over 2 years for nothing! Then they charged me £40 pm for 512kb downstream and I lost my static IP).
Now I pay £35 pm for 2Mb down and 256k up. I have a hosted web site so I don't need the extra upstream bandwidth. If BT brought their prices in line I would go back to them. Telewest is considering a 4 Mbit service, which I would love for £50 pm.. We will have to see.
I don't know if you have Telewest in your area, although I think that they were linked to NTL at some time, but I could be wrong. There are lots of ISP's out there which run on BT's backbones, so unfortunately the cost is semi fixed from BT. It is a shame that we are being ripped off for our connection prices over here, whearas in some areas in the US, the broadband connection is included with the cheap telephone packages. The American's don't stand for it!

i have cable just now , 1024k download for 25 per month ,
just found out adsl is ok for new house, whats the fastest / per cost providers ? , will have a look but you guys may save me a lot of time !!
thanks
eclipse, pipex, nildram..
www.adslguide.org.uk do a very good monthly table.
I've just take a pipex 512 connection for about £23 per month. It feels a lot quicker than my old cable connection, I suspect that is down to pipex having a better network than NTL...

aaaahhhhhh , just found out the house im moving to on the i.o.w cant get cable internet, next door neighbour being funny etc ... , apart from adsl from bt is there ANY other way of getting a faster connection than dial-up ?
dont think most replys understood your post m8.

The only real allturnative ofer than cable and asdl.
would be a satlite link.
very expencive
there are cheaper options where you only download from the sat link and upload from a telephone line
but a full up and down link is expencive
and unless you want it for buissnes or work
it wouldent be worth it.
unless you got more money than sence.
personaly If it was me my nabore would just have to agree with the cable.
or suffer big time.

I've heard it said that NTL's *network* is actually pretty good - certainly I frequently max out my 1Mbit connection.
The things that aren't so good are their thrice-damned transparent web proxies. Heaps of steaming cow dung to a machine in that they're frequently less than bloody transparent.
