Just having a little 'conversation' with someone on another forum.
She says that Ferrari's are plagued by bad gearboxes...

I've had no experiences with anyone who has had problems with their gearbox, have any of you guys?

- Just want to put her straight that they're reliable providing they're driven!

Not every day, it's out most weekends and sometimes during the week.
If the weathers particulary good then it's been known to do 400 miles in a week

It's going away for the winter soon though - Don't want the salt on the roads causing problems!

Never had anything go wrong on the 355 and 360. I always pay attention and try to take it easy when changing from 1st-2nd as this is normally the most aggressive gear change. I remember reading this in Forza and it's always stuck with me.

May have completely mis-read it but everything is sweet so far. 360 only suffers chronic petrol loss

P.S Foxy, wanted to see what your Ferrari looked like and suprise, suprise your photo was viewed double that of any other picture. That'll be the hounds of PH up to no good

I know! It's quite flattering to know I look better than a 355!

Wonder if accusations of "bad gearboxes" are really referring to clutches?

Certainly, some clumsily driven Ferraris might have higher than average clutch wear - especially F1 gearboxes of course, where the less informed owner allows the clutch to hold on standstill rather than snick into neutral.

But I have some experience of older 308' and 328's - certainly no problems with gearboxes there IMO.

Driven my 355 spider nearly every day for the last year. No problems with anything, especially not the gearbox.

I destroyed my 348 gearbox going to the factory, but ther did rebuild it for me when I arrived. Cost 4.5 million Lira to repair.

Cheers

Don't get me started about gearboxes!!!

I need planning permission to get 2nd when it's cold

It was never like that before the rebuild though?

I think the older ones may be quite sensitive to the oil that you use. I had mine 'rebuilt' in the summer, and it gradually developed a vibration until I changed the oil 500 miles after rebuild, after which it was fine again?
