Pay negotiation - useful advice, please
Discussion
explain that you simply can not afford to live on their offerings?
obviously speak highly about the position, and how much you would love take up such a task etc etc, try not to include any cliche phrases though!
it's worked for me in the past - not by much; but it covered my fuel costs per week.
difference being is I'm a MGC - aka contractor..... It's in my brain to re-negotiate any offerings & perks.
The worst they can say (to your face) is "No."

i'd view it differently
you have said yourself its hard to get a job and you are grateful.
If I was a potential employer and you tried to increase the pay i'd think:
before he has even started this guy is trying to get more money, i'll go back to the hundreds of potential candidates and get one more thankful.
Personally, i'd try and cut my bills and chop in the TVR to get the job. Then (if you are very good) in a years time if you have proven yourself i'd try ask for an increase.
You may just not get hired if you start whingeing before you get the job
Salary negotiations are definitely not 'whingeing'. It will depend on the job I guess (Halfords aren't exactly going to give any extra to the Saturday sales monkeys) but for the vast majority of salaried positions there is always the expectation of a bit of back-and-forth. Certainly I have negotiated increases to the basic salary in every single job I've ever had, and I've never had the impression that my employers thought it was anything other than entirely normal.you have said yourself its hard to get a job and you are grateful.
