Afternoon all,

I have recently been undergoing various tests due to having high blood pressure. So far, I have not been told anything as to why I'm having the tests and what I can expect in the future. I was hoping that somebody may be able to shed some light? I'll try and keep the following short but I'm guessing I'll ramble on a wee bit.

So, a brief history:

I'm 27 yrs old, 100kg (over weight by a stone I'd say, I have a large 'frame'), 6.2ft, smokes -10 a day, drinks on average 4-6 pints a week, takes regular excercise although should do it more often, diet is verging on being unhealthy.

Father has had 2 mild heart attacks. Suffers from High blood pressure, early stages of CHD, has had a couple of stents implanted. Grandfather was diabetic, no other news on heart conditions within the family.

I visited my GP after becoming worried for my heart through my Dad's experince and as I was suffering pains in my chest and left arm. GP diagnosed straight away with high blood pressure (avg 170/105)although everything else appears normal. Advised to quit smoking immediately and referred me to NHS stop smoking clinic. Referred to Hospital for ECG and to have a 24hr blood pressue monitor fitted, blood tests and to see a DR specialising in cardio.

Blood tests show no worrying results, cholesterol level is an okay 4.5. Unsure of results on ECG, 24hr blood pressure monitor results confirm high blood pressure through the 24hr period.

Cardio specialist would like another blood test, 24hr urine sample, Echocardiogram and an MRI on my kidney's. Also put me on 2mg Penidopril for 7 days, then upped the dosage to 4mg.

I met with my local GP after a week and a half of seeing the specialist and it would appear the penidopril is having no affect on my blood pressure. The dosage was then upped to 6mg (still taking now).

All tests done. I've not had any results of the above as yet (had my MRI yesterday) and my appointment with the Cardio DR is not for another month or so.

This has obviously left me all a bit worried as I've not heard anything and more worryingly, it's not been explained to me why I'm having the checks done. The internet is pretty usefull but it can't tell me their train of thoughts.

I've been told that the 24hr urine test is to check that I do not have active tumour in my kidney's. This obvioulsy made sense to me as I've also had an MRI on them but it's made me pretty worried.

Also (I'll be done in a minute I promise), since taking the Penidopril I have been wee'ing like a race horse. For the last 4 weeks I have had growing discomfort in my kidney's.

Any ideas, reassurance that I'm not going to catch bird flu etc greatly appreciated smile

Cheers

the 24 hour urine test is for a variety of things.. but with your symptoms they will be looking for a pheochromacytoma which is a rare secreting tumor on your adrenal glands, these are tiny glands above your kidneys, its a form of cancer that normally is benign. although a small number do go malignant. they normally whip out the kidney, spleen, bit of your bowel and away you go.. depending on how big it is. and which side it is. you can function with most bits missing...

I wouldn't do doctor google at the moment.. wait and see... if you start looking at adrenal cortical carcinomars, neuroblastoma's and the like you will scare your pants off.. I'm talking from experience. alternatively you may just have a hereditary disposition to high bp and its just a question of finding the right combination of meds to ease it off.

and yes.. you will probably die of swine flu like the rest of us anyway...

Sorry, I haven't got time to read the posts, but apparently a glass beetrootjuice can lower blood pressure by 10 points or something.

no probs...

the urine tests take weeks to get the results unless you are in a mainstream hospital.. you just have to sit tight and wait, if they come back positive.. drop me a line.. good luck

in the meanwhile if it is a suspected pheochromocytoma do NOT do any contact sports.. and or anything massively physical. if you are injured do not have an anaesthetic without telling the paramedics first... it will kill you.

Cheers!

Good to know about the anaesthetic, you would have thought the docs would have told me!

Many thanks for your help. I'll update the thread when I have some news smile
