you need msconfig (start->Run->msconfig), that'll sort your problems.

Messenger (I'm assuming windows XP's inbuilt messenger) is a different kettle of fish and has to be disabled via the tool "gpedit", it's under Admin or something. Be very careful when messing about in there however!

To change the startup item go
Start>run>msconfig
but you probably want to turn messenger off in services.
I suggest you have a look at an xp tweaking article such as may be found at
www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=guide

Don't jump in unless you understand what you are getting into but if you read it sober you should be ok.

Can't help with boot up selection but if you go to run and type "msconfig" then enter this will show you what is booting up on start up. If you untick anything that you do not want or need and then let it reboot this should solve.

Right click My Computer fron the desktop. select properties, then advanced, then startup and recovery and the menu delay is in there.

You can also run servisces.msc to see what is running automatically.
