Road trip through to Northern Spain
Discussion
Hi folks
My better half and I are seriously contemplating taking the MX5 for a road trip through France and into Galicia to her folks' place. Initial expectations are a 10 day trip (taking in sights to and from) through West Coast of France and across Northern Spain.
Has anyone done anything similar? Any good roads / good sights that are "must see" along the way?
Cheers in advance
Phil

The Pyrenees are brilliant fun - I explored them last year: you could possibly combine both the French and the Spanish side on the outward/return journey.
The A136 and the D934 over the col du Portalet was quite good. Then head east over the D918 from Laruns including the spectacular col d'Aubisque, via the D921 and Luz St. Sauveur and on to the col de Tourmalat (brilliant but watch out for cyclists). Continue on the D918 then switch to the D618 for more entertainment. At Vielha switch to the C28, C1412 and the N260 to Puigcerda or head up to Andorra. Don't miss the Port d'Envalira, the highest pass in the Pyrenees.
On the South side the N260 is a great road which will take you to West to Jaca.
Slightly further South the BV4241 from Berga to Tremp was fantastic - no traffic, a wide variety of bends and great views.
Some of the minor roads in the Serra De Cadi were brilliant - the B400 to Gosol was fantastic fun - a few quarry lorries provided easy overtaking opportunities.

Hi,
Can't add any useful info yet I'm afraid, but planning a similar, but slightly longer trip next year to SE Spain. Would be interested to hear everyone's thoughts on just how viable a long road trip is. We're going to try and make a holiday of the trip itself, before visiting family at the end, ie spend a couple of days at several stops en route (just Brussels and Paris so far, but possibly, Munich, Milan and Barcelona on the way). Although the mileage itself looks fine, I don't know any of the routes well enough to know whether 500 miles in a day is just too much.
Regards

Once in galicia you could try taking the coastal road (c-550) from cee all the way down to Ribeira and from there you can the motorway to Pontevedra for a bit of sightseeing and a bite to eat! On the c550 there will be lots of chances to stop off for pictures and drinks tapas. Quite a few chances to put your foot down along the way if thats your thing as well!!
If you want any more info the feel free to ask as this is my part of the world!

Totally concur - having just returned from a 1,750 road trip through France, hopping into/out of Spain throughout the Pyrenees on an east to west plan; and then through Northern Spain to Bilbao, I can confirm these are excellent routes. Wonderful road conditions and scenery/drivability, limited traffic, some lovely villages and places to explore. At Vielha switch to the C28, and the N260 to Puigcerda. I've been driving these roads for the last 10 years, just fantastic aint they.
Quick tip. In Vielha there is a great hotel, its pretty damn new, and out of sking season can be had for around 35 euros a night inc a great breakfast. Its called the Marvel Vielha. Good place to act as base for a Pyrennes tour.
