Hey all,

I am looking to add a second car on to my policy, ideally with an insurer who will mirror my NCB on to the second car, otherwise it is going to get pricy. So far I have found cheap(ish) TVR insurance, cheap second car insurance but not the two together. I was wondering if anyone has done this or knew of a TVR specalist who also deals with regular second cars?

Second cars is a 306 GTI 6 btw.

Thanks!
Alex

Try Sunninghill. They have multi car policies and will mirror NCB.

How old a TVR?

Try Haggerty for a classic policy...actually, not even sure if it has to be over 10 years old? They insure my cerbera and I don't use my NCB...there may be some limitations however...owned a TVR before, age, etc....worth checking though.

Before that I was using Bell direct, part of the admiral group - both mirror NCB onto second cars.

306Gti...mmmm...almost as good as a 205Gti...I know, I know, it is better but not through my rose tinted specs!

Its an '02 Tamora, so I doubt they would cover me on a classic policy...

That said it cant hurt to ask!

Hagerty would do. I got a shockingly cheap quote on a T350 a few months back.

I don't think they do multi car policies, but the premium may be cheap enough to justify keeping them seperate?

Out of interest, does a multi car policy usually work out cheaper? I'd never even considered one before.

It can do sometimes, for me its mostly about the NCB. As i understand it you can only have it "active" on one car at a time and without it the new car is just a bit too pricy. With some multi car policies you can mirror your NCB on both cars, making it a lot cheaper then most seperate policies.

Unfortunatly Haggarty cant cover the 306, as its not a classic/sports car or indeed me as I am not over 30. Which sort of ruins that plan. Still the chap I spoke to gave me a few names to talk to.

Doh! Forgot about that...

I'm under 30 too, but fortunately got in before they introduced the new rule. Mine's insured without any NCB (which is handy as some bint recently wiped it while I was in the Focus rolleyes) and still only costs £210 a year, so if you can find an equally cheap specialist then seperate policies may work.

This is posing more problems then i thought it would...

Sunninghill gave me a great quote on the TVR but again the 306 proved a stumbling block, with quotes coming in at £3,000! to be fair to Garry who was trying to sort it for me, he was absolutly stunned and could not work out why it would be so much.

The search continues...

Colleague at work today told me Admiral do a 2 car policy...he was quoted for a 996 C4 and a Jag X-type 2.5 and it came out really cheap! Maybe worth a try?

Have you tried Hagerty?

We have the Megane with Direct Line (cheapest I could find) and the Cerb (2002) with Hagerty, no other company came close.

Tried Admiral multicar, am with Elephant at the moment, so same parent company. I was looking at about £800 for the tvr and £860 for the 306! Hagarty cant help as they have an over 30s policy on TVRs now, apparently they took some heavy claims with younger drivers last year.

Worth a shot, but in my experience you usually need a specialist insurer for something like a TVR and definitely when you combine it with a young driver. I speak from bitter experience - the mainstream quotes for mine started at ten times my current premium, even people like Adrian Flux were talking four times.

Hi Alex,
I bought my first TVR, (1998 Chimaera 4.0L), last October and put it away for the winter end of November, (I won't be doing that again!). Anyway, what with the grandkids needing to be picked up from school and other stuff, I quickly decided that a "sensible" car was needed. Enter my 1999 Jaguar XJ8, (I couldn't help it - a big boy made me do it!). Anyway, to answer your question, I had the runaround from most insurance companies, (including my present insururer - Adrian Flux). All wanting ridiculous amounts for the second car, except Admiral (Multicar policy). I ended paying a little over what I was paying for the TVR for both, with comparable fully comprehensive cover. Their website was easy to use and I'm happy with the service - hope this helps.
Best Regards,
Glyn

A-Plan do my Chim and BMW but as separate policies - I have to have business use so Haggerty's can't help me.

Direct Line gave the best price for the Tam as a second car was £600 for 7k miles pa. They effectivly copy your no clames from the other car. Tried lots of others and they could get no where near.

likewise I had to apply my NCD on my main car. I got my renewal from A-Plan on my modified Griff and they wanted best part of £470 eek with the one year's no claims I had built up for the griff (60% on main car). I then tried several others from the PH insurance wiki page, the best I think was Haggertys who quoted about £310 on what they referred to as a 'Classic Car Policy'. When I went back to A-Plan to decline the original renewal they suddenly 'found' their own Classic Car policy for only £305 ! Only downside I can see is apparently the classic policy doesn't accumulate any future NCD but if it's only 65% of the cost in the first place I'm not too fussed as it would take many years to recoup the higher premiums once you'd built up the NCD.

Just for the record that £305 was for a heavily modified Griff 500, parked on driveway, driven by me only (49 , clean licence angel )limited to 3000miles pa.

I'd second that, I was with them for years. Now with Adrian Flux based on cost, but with less policy features, times are tough.

Both Direct Line and A Plan gave me the best quotes around.

I have to say that I found the customer service at A plan the best over all.
