For the second time today I bought a DVD and couldn't get into it! There appeared to be some sort of red plastic strip in the box locking it shut and locking the disc in.

Only way to get it open was to break the box apart. See pics below.

There appears to be no release mechanism but the metal parts in the plastic would suggest a magnet is required to remove it. Or am I complete spaz and this is a simple to remove lock that I can't find the button or should it have been removed at the shop?

It was in The Dark Night that had an exterior cardboard cover blocking view of said red plastic. DVD was bought from Tesco.

next time use a magnet to just pull it out like they do in the store. Or do like i did, and spend over 10 minutes with a knife and a drill trying to remove it mad

Its a tag as said above but it must be a Tesco's trick as I have had a couple now from there that I have had to take a hammer to to remove.

Yeah this one was from Tesco as well.

Pisses me off that I have to find new DVD boxs to replace the wrecked ones.

Is it an RFID tag?

If it is they can track it to within a few feet you know...and it can read your mind and transmit your deepest darkest desires back to the evil, shadowy overlords that are the sinister power behind Tescos. yes

evil

Not just Tesco I'm afraid, we found one of those in a DVD from HMV last week... I got away with just a crack in the box, but it does look like a magnetic thingy. Why is it under the wrapper though? you can't just open up all your DVDs in the shop to get the tags off surely?
