Steering, have you heard of this before?
Discussion
Hi guys,
Currently my Cooper 05 is running sweet but I have noticed the power steering deteriorating over time. Initially it popped and cracked upon start up. As if there were bubbles in the system. (electric though I know). Over time it stopped making this noise on startup and seemed to be ok.
Then a couple of months later the power steering failed as I was driving along. It has been failing randomly ever since. Maybe once a week. Once it failed so I shut the engine down and restarted yet it was still broke. Had to restart a 2nd time.
Now the current situation is that the steering is really soft, its light and feels as if the steering wheel isnt connected to the wheels. There's definitely something different as my lane discipline on the motorway coming home tonight was sloppy.
So is it finally on the way out? How much longer do I have?
I dont want to spend any more money on it as I have spent nearly a £1k in a year on tires, engine mount, 4 wheel alignment and servicing parts. I find BMW's attitude to this disgusting. Totally washing their hands of these problems is not on! I was appalled to hear them say power steering is a luxury and not a necessity so they wont fix it under warranty.
As far as Im concerned its a dangerous trait for any car to have. I was even over mid way though overtaking a caravan on a NSL road the second time it broke. As you can imagine, not a great experience.
