Cataclean (Sky TV)
Discussion
There I was watching the BS sales pitches on Sky TV when this Cataclean product came up. Same old cornball presentation "That's right, Chip, we just poured it straight into the tank and look at the reading on the CO meter, it's right down".
Usual claims for better economy, cleaner cat etc so I bought a bottle, being careful not to get sucked into the repeat order ruse. Stuck it in the tank about 4 weeeks ago and forgot about it. Can't say I noticed any amazing difference and just put it down to being a comprehensive fuel system cleaner.
Had the MOT today and looked at the emissions results and compared them to last year.
Fast Idle:
2002 CO by volume 0.13% 2003: 0.06%
2002 HC ppm vol 17ppm 2003: 15ppm
Natural Idle:
2002 CO 0.12% 2003: 0.02%
I'm not sure if this is significant or not but given that the air filter will be a lot dirtier than last year, I was intrigued that it should be cleaner this year than last year.

This reminds me of some stuff I bought in B&Q (really!) a few years ago, when I was sure my current car was going to fail its emissions test. I've still got it- it's called CAT Guard, made by REDEX. It contains platinum & rhodium to re-coat your cat, and they guarantee that your car will pass it's emissions test.
