Is it possible/acceptable to repair a Rover based TVR cylinder head by welding ? Has any one heard of this being done and did it last? Any comments and advice would be most welcome.

Have come across this technique to repair heads that have broken through while being ported. That would be in unstressed areas though, welding doesn't seem to be a generally accepted technique for putting broken heads back together. And thinking about it, they would have been cast iron heads while the Rover heads are alloy. So I don't know, it may be possible for some limited repairs or it may be completely out of the question. Definitely not a common repair technique though.

Had an old six cylinder BMW years ago, the head was aluminium and split under the cam for most of its length. Got it TIG welded all the way along, line bored the cam journals and it never failed again!

It depends on whereabouts on the head it needs to be welded, as bear in mind any heat treatment of the head will cause it to warp a little you'll have to make sure that its flat and your rocker pillar areas are still flat and reasonably true to each other after welding. Also worth bearing in mind that welding will create a flaw in the material and if it's too thin or highly stressed in this area it may well break again.
That said you can do it and get away with it.

Best of luck
