These are from my first proper go at some macro photography. I only had the kit lens and the camera's macro setting to help me so aren't even close to the quality of some on here.
The reason I haven't stuck these in the random photos thread is because I would like some proper feedback on them as I realised I quite like getting up close to such interesting beasties but want to know how I can improve. I know the best thing to do would be to get a better lens but any suggestions on technique would be greatfully received. Thank you smile.

Bit annoyed that the head isn't in focus in this one:

Not the best shot in the world but there's something about it that I quite like:

There's some nice shots there, especially with a kit lens!

Where did you take these? I'd love to get some decent butterfly shots.

Thanks!
It's Edinburgh Butterfly World, just off the City Bypass. Website.
If you are near then it is definitely worth a visit. With the right kit it would be a great place to go for a bit of practice beacuse the place is full of the things.

Bugger. I've got a nice, shiny Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro and ringflash to play with, but they and I are in Surrey, so not exactly local! hehe

London Zoo has a butterfly house where you just go in and they are flying around so no glass/cage in the way. They also have "walk through" enclosures with birds, monkeys etc.. Makes for a nice day out. smile

ETA - Some good photos there Craig. Very good with a kit lens.
