Chaps,

I was up at my Bro's place today and he showed be what looked like the toppart of a suspension spring and asked if I thought it was off his M5.

It certainly looked like it, but are M5's known to have this as a weekness?

Modern cars are a lot heavier than they were in the past, and modern German cars in particular are a lot firmer than they used to be too ... Sport and M cars even more so. Spring rates are correspondingly high, and often shorter than they would have been some years ago.

It's not uncommon for springs to crack and snap on many cars, and some will get reported / documented / spoken about on forums a lot until they become classed as a "common problem for the model"

It'll be easy to see whether the spring came from his car by jacking it, and cheap to fix too.

Thanks Mat, I'll take a look with him next time I'm up. I'd hope the fix would be a warranty job as its only 3 y/o with c25k on it.

Thanks for the response.

I'd hope the warranty covered it too. Hope you get it sorted.

I'd be hoping that they'd replace in pairs, however, to ensure that the spring rates match.

Never heard of that before, would be surprised if anyone else has had the problem.

Had to change the rear springs on my E60, easy job, but springs were ordered from Germany, so had to wait for them. Fairly easy DIY repair though.
