e46 Vanos Problems

Hi Guys

Friends e46 m3 2002 edition has started missfiring and the dealer has advised that the 'Vanos' require a full replacement at a cost of £2,500 !

Where is the best place to find these parts which are not Main Dealer parts.

Also can anyone explain what the 'Vanos' actually is ?
