Yes, sadly my member is now old, same as the rest of me!
I took the plunge and purchased a LeMans Blue 2000 (July) Model last weekend, awesome car, the noise, presence and overtaking oomph is amazing very happy!
However she has done 110k and feels like she needs a freshen up so I am going to get all the bushes replaced and I dont know if anyone here can help but I feel alot of slack in the drive train and have difficulty pulling away smoothly at Mid enthusiasm.
Poodling is fine she chugs away, full bore and she bonfires the rears for a second then makes the jump to hyperspace. But middle of the row, wrong lane need to outdrag that mondeo but not frighten the wife type of thing and I kangaroo like a learner.
Anyone advise? Is there a rubber bush in the prop i can change?
Do I need the X5 bushes as recommended by M5 Board, anyone from Ipswich that can recommend the guys in AShbocking to keep her up to spec?
After a long plane journey last night, just walking across the dark car park to her knowing I had 100 miles to drive home, made me smile and thats what its all about! That and the howl on fire up that could blow over a Smart Car at 100 paces!
Oh and the stereos gone bonkers, cant adjust the volume on wheel or system directly, worked fine until yesterday. I just turned it off and kept the windows down.
Can you tell i'm excited?

Get yourself registered on M5Board.com - loads of usefull info including a reset of the electrical system when the stereo decides to go wibble.
With regard to the lack of midrange, this is the e39 ///M5's stomping ground so something not right somewhere.
First off get the codes checked as the ECU can store codes without tripping a Check Engine Light and there are 3 limp modes that the car can be in each one reducing power over the other.
If all checks out OK then start looking at basics first - fuel filter is common, then slowly work towards MAFS although a quick test for these is a steady right foot at 30MPH in 3rd then press the sport mode button and you should feel a "shove" in the seat butt dyno.
If you can get to South Staffs at all then I have the code reader to plug in

Pressing the sport button isn't a way to test the MAFs all it does is sharpen the throttle repsonse at any given point.
To test the MAFS follow this set of insructions, you will find them on the M5 board as well.
Testing the MAFS :
Follow these instructions, and select the mode for fuel consumption per hour below.
With the engine fully warmed up, drive several WOT (wide open throttle) accelerations. Notice the fuel flow per hour numbers. If everything is ok the numbers should increase continously to about 140 litres per hour at WOT at 7000 RPM. (don´t worry about bouncing into the rev-limiter)
The fuel-flow is directly proportional to the MAF reading reported to the Engine Electronics, so if the
Fuel-flow is correct, the MAFs are most likely correct too.
UNLOCK PROCEDURE:
1) Key to ignition pos 2 (no need to start engine).
2) Fasten the seat belt to get rid of the "Fasten Seat Belt" message.
3) Press the right button on the instrument panel, and hold it until "TEST-NR. 01" comes up (5 to 10 seconds).
4) Press the left button on the instrument panel, and the vehicle id comes up (last 7 digits of VIN).
5) Add up the last 5 digits to get the "unlock code", e.g. the unlock code for "AB12345" would be 15 (1+2+3+4+5).
6) Repeatedly press the right button until "TEST-NR. 19" appears.
7) Press left button -> "LOCK : ON"
8) Repeatedly press left button until "LOCK : xx" appears, where "xx" is your unlock code.
9. Press the right button. All modes are unlocked now.
NAVIGATING BETWEEN TESTS AND PERFORMING THEM:
- Follow steps 1) to 3) of the "UNLOCK PROCEDURE" to enter test mode.
- Use the right button to step from test to test.
- Press the left button to enter a test and cycle between modes within a test.
- Press and hold the right button to exit test mode (turning the key to 0 works as well).
2) Instrument test: Cute light show in the instrument panel. Ever wanted to see the speedo show 190 without having to leave the garage?
3) Don't know.
4) Current fuel consumption in liters per 100 kilometers and in liters per hour. (Maf Test- it's the 2nd option in this test field)
5) Average fuel consumption in liters per 100 kilometers and range.
6) Current fuel levels in left tank, right tank, and total.
7) Engine temperature (not sure where measured), engine RPM, and outside temperature.
8) Current speed in kilometers per hour.
9) Battery voltage.
10) Country.
11) Don't know.
12) Not sure what these are. Could be average speed used to calculate arrival time for distance to destination set in OBC?
13) Sound test. Goes through the various gong sounds.
14) Don't know. Could be some diagnostic codes.
15) Don't know. Looks like a real-time readout of some registers.
16) Oil temperature. I sometimes get a bogus -48 degrees C when the engine is not running. Corrects itself when the engine is on.
17) Don't know.
18) Doesn't do anything.
19) Locking & unlocking of the test modes.
20) Don't know.
21) Don't know. This test asks you "RESET?". Let me know what it does, if you're brave enough to try it. I'd recommend to stay clear, though.

Either get the car to Darren Farrell just outside Colchester / Braintree area or up to David Olias in Suffolk for detailed info on how to improve your handling / performance / ride. Both run M specialist garages.
Darjac Racing and David Olias can boh be googled or found via the M5Board.com

Its just pulling away from a standing start at "Mid attack" that causes a sloppy kangarooing.
I think that's down to the mad clutch thingy that the z4m's have. I asked my mech, and he said they all do it, and I should learn to drive better. Ha ha.If you have the Sport button on in low gears, it also makes smooth driving very difficult. I personally find it too much of a hair-trigger with Sport and prefer the modulation that normal mode gives (as well as the steering wheel resistance being spot on in normal and too artifically heavy in Sport)

For me, the Sport button is pointless and somewhat gimmicky. I never touch it. Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
