i think youve done a cracking job. His flesh tones look a tad yellow to me, but my monitor isnt 100% colour accurate.

Maybe worth putting a slight shade of colour on the backdrop? Even a pure white wall has some hue to it in a photo

Thanks Fordo smile

Will do something with the wall - any suggestions on what sort of shade? And his skin tone.... I'm not sure about that - I think it needs to be darker. I'll give it a go.

Probably a couple of shades darker? Depends on hether you want it to be accurate or arty.

ok...

- You've lost the "whites" in the very highlights of the skin tones.
- Now you've colourised the main parts, add a Colour Balance to the whole image, working in Shadows,Mids and Highlights to a common theme - This should tie it all together.
- Remember white is rarely "white," or 255,255,255. (The wall behind needs an overall natural colour tone, and so does his shirt - You need to add some bounce light / colour casting)
- The trumpet has too much green
- The eyes lack life - too flat. Add some Highlights and soft-skin tones to the soft tissue areas.
- The ring on his finger needs a little work

<above comments for first image>

Image 2 needs levels and white point adjusting (no highlights). Skin tone looks to burned (over saturated towards orange). Somewhere in between the 2, with an overall colour balancing to tie everything together...

If you;ve been working on the image too long and have gone "image blind", try flipping the whole thing horizontally and working it up again... you'll get a whole new outlook from this simple <temporary> flip over!

Just my 5p's worth - what do I know!!!!!

oh, and levels the original B&W image.

When you are happy with it, copy and paste it over your colour added image and add it as a Luminosity Layer.

If that makes an improvement, duplicate the B&W image layer again, and try changing "Luminosity" to other layer effects (adjusting opacity to fine tune if required).

Thanks for that Gallen. I've managed to implement some of your suggestions - highlights, less green on the trumpet, eyes more alive (I think) and skin tone less orange. The rest will have to wait until I've spent more than a couple of weeks learning to 'chop biggrin
