I see the BBC have remade the classic Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin with Martin Clunes in the lead role.

I'm guessing it won't quite be like the original, it will bow to modern PC'ness. Even the characters will be different. For example the person playing CJ is Neil Stuke who played Matt in the later series of Game on, he's younger than Clunes. John Barron will always be CJ and no one will get close to it.

Wendy Craig is in it she's cast as Reggie's mother. She was never in the original series.

Have any comedy series remakes ever worked?

Sounds absolutely dire.
A great comedy classic ruined for a new audience.

I can't think of many remakes of old comedy series, but from the 2 I can think of it will be dire.

Paul Merton remade Hancock's Half Hour. Nooooo.

Ant and Dec did an episode of The Likely Lads. Again, nooooo.

I loved Reggie Perrin as a kid but seeing it lately on Sky or whatever was a real letdown. It was just so slow.

Give me Rising Damp any day of the week.

I didn't get where I am today by making pathetic remakes of great TV classics!

Emperors new clothes here, but if they wanted it to be exactly the same as the original, they would just re-show the original. They were great scripts, and why should they not be made more accessable? I think giving Reggie a younger boss could be very interesting as well. And does anywhere like 'Sunshine Deserts' actually exist anymore?

I'll try watching it, though when I saw the trailer, I thought it won't be any good!
Some of these things may have been OK if you didn't compare them with the origional.
e.g. Minder.
& films like Starsky & Hutch or Dukes of Hazzard.

I think on the clip it's some sort of IT company.

Such a classic I really hope they don't ruin it. At least with Clunes at the helm it's got a fighting chance - if they had used someone like the Dr in My Hero (is it Dennis or something?) then it would instant crap

hugh dennis? that man should be shot. him and the other guy - punt? - how the hell they are classed as comedians is beyond me. trevor & simon from going live were better.

as for perrin, i love it and it was shown before i was born!

There were just so many perfect images in the original series, the walk to and from the train station passing all the avenues, closes and roads named after poets, the sign at Sunshine Deserts with letters falling off it, the image of a Hippo whenever his mother-in-law was mentioned. Loads more, most very subtle which the modern BBC doesn't seem to do any more.

That's the fellow - can you imagine him as Reggie! Good luck to Clunes, always rated him, just hope the writers are up to scratch

That's right. And when I put Perrin in search, no other threads came up, so I posted here. After all, where better to put an opinion than in the original thread? I didn't get where I am by today by posting in the right place.

I'm actually quite enjoying it, in a rather bizarre way.
Mrs Perrin is rather fit, or am i getting old?

Me too. I thought it was a bad idea, and was biased against it. But if you can view it objectively, and not compare it with the classic original, it's well written and well cast.

And yes, Faye Ripley is hot (but I am old).
