"ICO rejects Google Street View complaint
No clear evidence the service is harmful
The Information Commissioner has ruled that Google's Street View is not a privacy threat.
The add-on to Google Maps and Google Earth offers photographs of streets and cities and was launched in the UK last month. However, Street View has come in for much criticism after it was revealed a number of inappropriate images were available on the service.
Privacy International complained to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), claiming it had seen at least 200 images where people's faces had not been blurred in photographs - a requirement made by the ICO when it initially gave the service the go-ahead last year.
"In our opinion, there is no clear evidence that the community find Street View particularly harmful or insidious," said the ICO.
"If consent were required by the law, then the producers of, say, Match of the Day, would have to gain the consent of all people attending televised football matches who might be caught on camera."
The ICO also said it would continue to monitor the service and deal with any web users that say Google has not removed inappropriate images.
Privacy International said it was "disappointed at the findings"."
Common sense prevails. The Match of the Day example is spot on, yet Privacy International are still not happy. LOL

hmmm...by going to a footy match I may assume they'd be a possibility that cameras may pick me up and show my image around the world, if I'm sitting in my front room playing with my plums I may not. The analogy is not spot on.
Unless you do that a lot, you're unlikely to be spotted doing so by one of their cars.CaptainSlow said:

Is your house made of glass? If not how can they see in?. If you were that worried about people walking past then I assume you have net curtains up. TheEnd said:
WHAT! People can see onto MY DRIVE, at MY CAR from any end of the country, or even on the OTHER side of the WORLD, and that's NOT an invasion of MY privacy!
How DARE they broadcast to everyone WHAT I have!
How does it cause you any more of a problem than someone walking past and seeing what car you have on your drive? How DARE they broadcast to everyone WHAT I have!

I suggest that everyone's high-principled defence of this is somewhat different to the reality.

Now go have a lie down before you injure yourself!
Right, so let me get this right. I take my camera into London and take a picture of a public building and I'll be arrested, yet a US based company can drive around my neighbourhood with a great big camera and post practically 360 degree views onto the internet for the general public to examine...
