Our mattress has clearly had it - I turned it over yesterday and you could hear lots of metal tipping from one side to the other - broken springs I assume.

Now I want to buy a new mattress. I have a very bad back as a result. Our bed is one of the those metal framed ones with wooden slats which go under the mattress. Does this need a special type of mattress? Would a divan base be better?

Can also vouch for a memory foam mattress - best money we have spent in a long while!!!!

When looking for a new mattress, make sure it's suitable for a slatted base - most should be, but I have to echo the above sentiments about a very good visco-elastic foam mattress.
After much, much research, we ended up plumbing for the Ergoflex one - and we weren't disappointed in any way.

Memory foam mattress all the way. However you do need to work out your thickness and also if they have more than one density of foam what the relative thicknesses are because the do differ.

They were invented as an offshoot of the NASA moon landings don't you know. Just like non stick pans and the thermos flask, so Alan Partridge would have you believe....

Thanks. Unfortunatley memory foam is a nono - the OH hates them. So it's got to be pocket sprung which should last longer at least. (based on a random sample of 10 people this am who all paid £500-1000 for a mattress)

About 2/3 the cost of a Tempur...

You spend about 1/3 of your life in bed, makes sense to spend as much as you can on a decent bed IMO.

yes but isn't tempur memory foam. BTW someone I know bought one thought it was ok but it didn't last very long which would disappoint me - you would expect 10 years with those prices

Yup, Tempur is memory foam. I'm expecting to get ten years out of mine which actually equates to about 46p a night for a decent sleep.

Get a normal (ie cheap) mattress and stick an old door under it.

Works wonders.

Crikey, I can't sleep in our memory foam one at the moment, can barely get out of it, also have a bad back.
