ks about with a snake whose bite does this:

This is a very common snake in these parts, unfortunately if they hear you coming they do not slither out of the way as most snakes would, they stand their ground and dare you to get closer.

Mmmm Fer de Lance. Evil b
ds
...came across one of those in Belize. About 4 feet above the ground when it rose up to start hissing and was LOUD. It made the guy in front of me go into instant reverse as it went for him causing a domino effect on the rest of us.
after about 15 minutes of LOUD hissing, and 18 shots the patrol cmdr downed it. Most evil looking thing I've ever seen, fangs 1.2 inches long and transparent so you can see the venom tubes running down the centre. snake was 7 feet long!

Cool. 7 feet is very long for a Fer de Lance. I would say it must have been a Bushmaster but not sure they are as far north as Belize. Lucky it rose up and hissed. Normally they don't do that, they stay very still and let you touch them once without moving. Touch them twice and they strike. I understand that Bushmasters rise up and hiss, but normally only at night if you shine a torch on them (they go beserk if they see a light). You are right about the evil look!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gli3iY5iAQ4&fea...

to be honest the only snakes they mentioned when we were there were the Coral, Fer de Lance and occasionally the locals mentioned the 'jumping Tommy Goff' whatever that is...
just googled FdL
Fer-de-lance: Bothrops atrox
fer de lanceDistribution: Tropical forests of Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Bolivia and northern Argentina. Central America, the West Indies and possibly Mexico.
Habitat: Forest areas, along stream edges and ditches. Also plantations and areas of human habitation.
Size: Length: average 1.8m-2.4m+#
Bushmaster
Appearance
An adult bushmaster typical reach a length of 6 feet (2 meter). Larger specimens can reach a length of 10-12 feet, but that is very uncommon. It is however the longest pit-viper.
so could have been either, however it was too long ago to remember what it looked like
