Why were the headlamps on the E46 M3 not changed along with the rest of the range when they were 'facelifted'?

I think something to do with the different bonnet (aluminium) and wings (flared) on the M3. The facelift coupe got new bonnet and wings so the new headlights wouldn't fit.

Re-tooling costs for the bonnet and wings would have been prohibitive for the remaining volumes that were projected for the M derivative.
