No idea if this should be in News or Economics and Politics.

"Gordon Brown has promised an environmentally friendly Budget later this month to kick start a "green recovery" – including the mass introduction of electric cars on Britain's roads.

. Alistair Darling, the Chancellor, will announce in his Budget that trials for electric cars in two or three cities will begin next year. Councils will be invited to bid to become Britain's first "green cities". The Government will open talks with power companies to ensure the vehicles can have their batteries recharged at a national network of power points at the roadside.

Mr Darling will also set a target of creating 400,000 jobs in "green industries" over the next five years.

Other green measures to be outlined by the Government shortly include relaxing planning rules to allow the building of more wind farms to ensure Britain hits its target to generate 15 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. "Smart meters" will eventually be installed in every home so people can see how much energy they use.

In his first newspaper interview since last week's G20 summit, Mr Brown kept open the option of a limited further fiscal stimulus in the Budget. But with public borrowing in the current financial year likely to rise from the forecast £118bn to around £150bn, he hinted that the Chancellor might have to announce more tax rises for the medium term to balance the nation's books.

I can't believe how so many people were so stupid to vote for the Labour party. To get the economy slash the size of the state and cut taxes.

Hey, I already have something similar, it's called the Electricity Bill. If I use more "energy" then my bill increases. Amazing how advanced I am out here in Suffolk, when we only got gas 10 years ago...

As for "Green" stuff, we are already paying through the nose for it, it's only going to get worse. Once this MMGW s**t is beaten then I hope we can publicly flog those who defrauded us for tax reasons.

There is no way I am accepting tax increases whilst MP's are giving themselves £100K a year in expenses.

You can cut your wages before I give you more tax you blood sucking barstewards!

Thing is, if he wasn't wasting all our money on implementing green schemes, etc(that invariably won't work/make a difference), then we'd probably have a lot more in the kitty at the moment.

Brown does realise that electricity doesn't get made magically without emissions, doesn't he?

Green budget = tax rises disguised as things for the better rolleyes

Marvellous, another excuse to put up road tax, petrol and force up the price of motoring.

God I hate this government.

Better Britian means a greener Britian.

More sodding windmill farms, more massive subsidies

Councils invited to submit bids to become 'green cities' so more CC tax

I started this under politics......it got ignored, I'm beginning to see the cracks in this new format

It’s just spin, they know the country is fooked financially (and morally, arguably!), so to try and put on a positive spin (from a left of centre point of view) on this, and dress it up as being ‘green’

So transparent it’s embarrassing.

That's very true. A good point indeed. So let's flatten some of our less pleasant cities and turf them over. hehe

I love the way the defenders of the green faith seems to think electricity is magicked up out of nothing!

They don't need to be transparent, my daughters boyfriend knows they're all bent and he's as thick as mince.

Do they expect us to wait 4-6 hours by the roadside for our cars to charge?confused

furious

Jumping back on the 'green' bandwagon can only mean the motorist is going to get cluster fked in the pocket again.

Id love to be able to dig up some facts based on the amount of energy required to charge an electric car to enable it to drive a certain distance compared to a petrol / diesel one, it cant be that different. Do these politicians think electricity is magiced out of thin air?

Hints of tax rises, how about cutting the more than generous expense packages that MP's recieve or cut back on pumping billions of pounds into the economy with no effect.
