Any vets in here?

Not Falklands vets, veterinary vets.
Took our year old tabby bundle of fluffy niceness to be spayed a couple of weeks back after we noticed an abundance of gnarly looking tomcats hanging around the garden like pervs.
All seemed well when I collected her, was quite impressed how small the incision scar was (remember as a kid when we had females done they were bigger) and she seemed right as rain.
We kept an eye on her to aviod any ott jumping/playing as advised and confined her to the bedroom at night to ensure the wound healed properly.
After 3 or 4 days I noticed the area of the incision was inflamed so rang the vet to ask advice.
They asked me if it appeared red and if she was biting/picking at it. It wasn't/she wasn't. They said it was not uncommon to get a slight reaction to the type of stitches used and it should receed in a couple of days. It didn't, so I took her back in and they gave me a course of antibiotics.
It didn't improve and within a couple of days was visibly larger and a noticably hard lump. We took her back, they seemed to think it was a hernia and the poor soul had to be cut open again today to sort it out.
So from orginally costing £51 for the initial operation, we're now up to a shade under a hundred quid (another 11 for the antibiotics, then 36 quid today for the second operation)
I'm feeling kinda stung here, is it normal to be charged for sorting things out when an operation goes wrong?
