Silencer packing

My boxes need repacking so it makes sense to have them modified so I can do it in the future.
What methods have been tried?
A panel on the top of the box is no doubt the simple solution but looks rather Heath Robinson. You could hide it by putting it on the underside but would need to take the pipes off each time.
Is there some way to make the box end removable and repack from there.
I have no idea what the internal layout is hence the questions.

Steve, On the Dax the tail pipe end of the exhaust was a slight interference fit into the silencer itself, this removable flange also supported the drilled exhaust pipe inside. To repack you just hit the flange of with a rubber mallet, pulled the old packing out and slid the new stuff in (easier than it sounds, used to use baking paper and tape to hold it together, pull the paper out afterwards..) I drilled and taped the jointed area to take a bolt, just to be sure it couldn't move.
I thought this was a very neat idea, and it looked like a once piece silencer.. I wonder if you could do something similar, maybe cut the last inch of the silencer and roll it smaller? - just an idea?

Just had mine repacked by Hayward & Scott, they make a cut about 50mm in from the header end, sleeve it and bolt it. The internals are three tubes with a chamber at each end (much like the Magnaflow boxes)Ian is the man.
When my computer is back I'll post some pics.

If packing from the top alone does not allow easy access to all the packing cavities would removing the end of the box make it any easier?
If I go the route of a cover on the top then what is the smallest cover I can get away with and where would it be positioned?
How do you seal it?

Steve.. for our build, we bought fiberglass packing..
it was some brand called "Hi-Silent Fiberglass" found locally..
I bought like 4 packs costing total about $110 usd
(really didn't need to repack, but having gone thru the process
once to repack the standard Ultima mufflers, i'd suggest
wearing long sleeve shirts :P )

Hi Steve, i would say an 'end chop' would allow better packing as the vented pipes run the length of the box and you can pack down in a straight line. With my arrangement you have to sort of pack down the sides and underneath from the top (technique to be learned lol).
Phils arrangement you can get to both sides quite easily so packing probably isnt a problem.
With mine, i could repack in situ, with the other two i guess i would be better to take the boxes off.
I think my panel is 170mm x 250mmbut you basically want to cut as bigger opening as you can get. my cover is made from 1.6mm stainless and curved to the shape of the box. (picture poss tonight or over weekend).
I bought some wadding from Custom Chrome in Nuneaton and it cost about £15 have about enough for two repacks.
