I am the (fairly) proud owner of an E280. It is a good runner and starts every time when cold. Once it has been on a longish run > 20 miles it then fails to start again while it is still warm. Once it has cooled down again it is fine and starts no problem. Temperature wise it seems to be spot on when running and doesn't get particularly hot.

Anyone any ideas what may be wrong?

Crankshaft position sensor. Costs about £100 and 5 minutes to change.

Cool, thanks a lot. Is it something I could do myself, given that I am not all that skilled biggrin

I think so. Unplug or unbolt the existing one and replace with the new one. When this happened on my SL, they asked me to leave the car because it is easier when the engine is cold. Apparently it is near the hot bits and access is difficult.
