Difference between 2.9 and 2.9 engine
Discussion
Title should have read 2.8 vs 2.9
Just wondering what gives the 2.9 that extra bit of bhp.
I've read my s1 should have about 160 and the s2 is good for 168.
What gives the extra? is it all in the efi. What are the other difference between the engines?
I've read that the s1 engine isn't very tunable but is there anything that can be done to get an extra 10-20 bhp out of it? (without spending big money)

Also 0.1 cc difference

Bit more than that - try 143 cc Craggers2792cc v 2935cc as standard

Bit of a spotter I know

Sorry
Mr Pedantic or Mark take your pick

ETA that is 5.1% bigger capacity but only 5% more power with a so called improved injection system. I know there's more to it than that and emmissions etc would have come into it as well but I would have thought that more than 100cc + improved ignition and control system should have given well over 10% power improvement.

I used to work at Ford and I quizzed one of our key powertrain engines about this when I was looking at S's. I then forgot all the details, but basically the main difference is in the breathing. The result is the 2.9 is a revvier engine with its power higher up the torque curve.
Random fact - did you know the Cologne V6 is still produced in somewhat modified form? The current V6 Mustang uses a development of it, along with some of the lighter US trucks.

Better Heads and exhaust manifold. The 2.8 has 4 ports for 6 cylinders or siamiesed ports. The 2.9 has 6 exhaust ports for 6 cylinders ie one per cylinder. This helps as does the different injection and of course the extra capacity.
I believe the 2.8 is also suffered localised overheating on the rear most clyinders, hence the bonnet scoop on the V6 S1, S2 and some S3's
Cheers

that old 2.8 certainly made a few Capri's fly in its day, put a few Beemers in their place on the race tracks of Europe !
Are you sure you're not thinking of the Capri RS3100 (Essex engine)?Gassing Station | S Series | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
