Hi All,

I have just purchased a M3 SMG E46 Model. I have been trying to get insurance and they will only insure me if the vehicle comes with a tracker. Do M3's come with trackers as standard or is this an optional extra???

Any help will be really appreciated.

Shop around, the only companies insisting on Tracker or similar in my experience were the RBS group of companies, Churchills, Direct Line etc and they were no cheaper than other mainstream companies who didn't need Tracker.

This year my cheapest quote came from Mayfair Insurance Brokers in Bedford, who asked me who my cheapest quote had been with and how much, then they beat it by £120.

Ring around trying Chris Knott Insurance, A-Plan or Adrian Flux (Google will you get you contact numbers), for me personally this year Adrian Flux came up the most expensive initially but they managed to match A-Plan but both were beaten by Chris Knott Ins who was eventually beaten by Mayfair. Other companies that came up with good quotes were Swinton (surprisingly) and Equity Ins who are also part of the Swinton Group.

Thanks for your help everyone. I have contacted Adrian Flux and they came in at £1000.00 without tracker. Not bad for my age and NCB.

Admiral don't require a tracker either.

You could also call up Tracker with the number plate and ask them whether it has one fitted.

Looking back on the conversation that I had with the guy, it could have been misused by a potential thief if they were "casing" a particular car.

"Hi there, I've just bought a car and was told it had a tracker. I'd like to renue my subsciption"

"Yes sir, that car does have a tracker!"

Would they have just told a random person over the phone that a car with a random numberplate didn't have a tracker???

Unfortunately they probably would. When I bought my car I found a Tracker folder in the boot. It was an AUC car and the supplying dealer did not know it had a tracker fitted as they failed to mention this selling point at any time. I rang up Tracker and quoted the serial number which was not recognised, so they looked the car up by its registration plate. All you would need to do is ring up and say you've just bought car registration XXXX and you'd like to transfer the tracker subscription to your name. That way you'll soon find out if it has/hasn't got one fitted.

It's quite likely that all E46 M3s have a tracker of some sort fitted, practically every insurance company demanded it when the cars were new. Of course, no guarantee the current owner or vendor will have any clue it's been fitted. As said above ring tracker and ask.

Also try to get hold of the original invoice for the vehicle - it may be listed on there, BMW included Tracker on the orderable options - even though it would be fitted at the dealership after PDI.

I have a tracker but it's switched off. Tracker will activate it for some silly amount of money.

My insurance does state I need one but it doesn't state if it needs to be activated.

Tracker won't do anything until I have a crime reference number so if my car is stolen I'll just phone tracker and subscribe - then phone the police.

Didn't your insurer ask for a certificate for your tracker?

My subscription costs less than a tenner a month, and without it I'm not covered against theft.

Insurer never asked. £120 a year is quite a big difference when added to the insurance premium.

I personally think it rediculous that tracker will not do anything until you have a crime reference number. Hence why I'm reluctant to pay them.

Yep, that's why Direct line, Churchill, Privilege tend to say it has to be fitted.
All generating money for the parent company.
