Ralph Firman has described the experience of driving his Formula 1 car around Macau as 'awesome' after Jordan made history in the Chinese city on Friday.

The British ace completed several spectacular flying laps of the Guia circuit to smash the circuit's lap record. His best lap was 1m59.484s – and he believes he could shave off at least six or seven more seconds during further runs at this weekend's 50th Macau Grand Prix.

Despite being caught out at the famous Melco hairpin on his second attempt, the former winner of the Macau F3 Grand Prix was delighted that the run had been so successful.

"It is just awesome," said Firman, who became the first man to drive an F1 car around Macau since the 1970s. "It's a great circuit and simply amazing to drive an F1 car here.

"It is a lot narrower and a lot quicker than Monaco – and we will probably be taking some wing off for tomorrow so we should go even quicker. We did 306kph today down the straight – and we will probably get up to 320kph tomorrow."

Firman claimed that the notorious Mandarin Bend was flat for him – and that he had to coast around the hairpin in neutral.

He said: "The first lap around the hairpin was okay but the second time I was in first gear and it just pushed on too much and I nearly hit the wall.

"There were lots of bets going on in the garage about whether or not I would make it on the first lap."

This sounds promising for him keeping his drive next year!
