The dead parrot sketch is not eligible for the this discussion, as;

a) everyone quotes it

b) it's not that funny

Any other sketches that are comedy gold?

"Dougal, this is a small cow. Those are far away"

"That would an ecumenical matter"

"Dougal: Can I stay up tonight to watch the scary film?
Ted: Ah, no no no. The last time you stayed up to watch a scary film you ended up having to sleep in my bed. I wouldn't mind, but it wasn't even a scary film.
Dougal: Come on, Ted. A Volkswagen with a mind of its own. If that isn't scary, I don't know what is."

"Jack : (pulling brick attached to string around ground) I love my brick!
Ted: I think we're seeing another side to Jack. A more caring, conside..
(Ted gets hit on head with brick)
Jack : Fed up with briiiick"

But the funniest (IMHO) was the suicidal depressed priest (Father Kevin) who had come to Craggy Island to cheer up - he had cheered up after listening to the "Theme From Shaft" ... only to get on a bus to hear Radiohead playing. No script necessary!

Another vote for Four Candles.

To be a little more original: "Goodness Gracious Me" and "Going for an English"

There's a couple of fantastic Smith and Jones sketches that always make me crease up. Never see them anymore though and no sign on YouTube.

Anyway, the first sees Griff playing a TV reporter, standing outside a shopping mall. Mel is in the studio. Mel introduces Griff saying "so, what is the situation in Thailand?". Griff looks confused and says "well, there's a Carpet Land, and a Leather World, but it's Tie Rack" as the camera pans back to frame him stood in front of the popular tie shop.

The other one is where Griff answers the door to Mel, playing a pizza delivery guy holding a pizza seemingly covered in thick red tomato sauce. Griff says he didn't order a pizza. Mel turns the "pizza" over to reveal a furry face with whiskers saying "I know, I'm afraid I ran over your cat".

Most of the I'm Alan Partridge Dante's Fireplaces episode is pure genius, too, not least the scene in the new house where the South African guy calls Alan a "can't". And the tail end of the show from the "Lynne, I've stepped on a spiiiike!" line onwards is stunning.

I agree - I loved Smith and Jones. Their sketch for the world's unluckiest man was genius, as was "Go on, hit me in the stomach" and many more.

I have had their DVD on pre-order from Play for about two years now - release keeps getting put back.

I would also add some of the Mary Whitehouse Experience sketches - especially the Shakespeare's Sister one....
