XBox 360 through computer monitor

Thinking of getting a 360, but will want to run it through my 22" LG L227WT monitor. Does anyone else do this? Realise I will have to get a HDMI to DVI-D convertor, and also a DVI-D splitter so I don't have to keep swapping the cable from my PC to the 360, any issues with loss of quality for either machine doing this?

No problems doing it. you can get a xbox - vga connector which I use.

Is it not better quality running it through the DVI using a convertor?

HDMI -> DVI-D would be the one to go for if your 360 has HDMI

If you have VGA and DVI onthe monitor (and input select) you could go VGA and not have to have a splitter

You will not notice any reduction in quality going with VGA connector.

Certianly the reduction in quality will be less than if you are using a HDMI-DVI then through a splitter.

VGA connectors for the XBOX also come with Red & White RCA leads so easy to plug into sound system.

An HDMI to DVI-D convertor will mean you loose sound, DVI does not have the capability to carry sound.
The best bet is to get the VGA cable as shown above, this way you get sound too.

Thats what I use albeit a 3rd party one. For the sound leads got a two-into-1 3.5mm jack for the 3.5mm input socket on my monitor.

Sorry to bump a relatively old topic, but I'd like some advice from the learned masses please

If I bought the xbox VGA + 2xRCA lead as posted above, could I use an adaptor to convert the RCA to 3.5 jack, and connect some headphones?

Not really as the output will be un amplified line out sound signal.

Best thing to do is plug into a cheap mini hifi system and then headphones into that.

Actually yes you can - that's what I use

I did use a set of headphones with a volume control, although now I just use it with set of speakers that have adjustable volume and a headphone jack as my old phones broke and the new ones had no volume adjuster on them.

I've got my Xbox hooked up to one of my computer monitors, sound runs through a splitter cable into the PC speakers (using the Xbox VGA cable).

There is only one problem - I cant get both sets of sound to run through the speakers at the same time. If the PC is on, it runs the speakers fine but the Xbox is mute. If the PC is off, the Xbox sound is fine too. Grrr...

Are you plugging the Xbox sound into the Line-in on your PC,or straight into the speakers? I do the former and it works fine (although you need the PC on to hear 360 sound, which is annoying).

hadn't thought of doing that, I just switch cables, or leave headphones in the PC and output the xbox to the PC's speakers, but that's a much better idea!

You want a VGA cable, as they have the sound coming with them.
As for video quality, you will not be able to notice much of a difference between anything on a 22" screen at that resolution.

However when you go crazy and buy a 40" TV, you'll notice a big difference in quality, but it's okay you can plug the HDMI cable in then.
