My father-in-law keeps recording TV programmes for us as I have niot got round to buying PlayTV yet. He uses Panasonic DVD-RWs so that he can re-record over them.

When I put them in the PS3 it makes a funny noise as if it is trying to read the disc but then nothing happens?

Is this a fault or do they just not play these type of discs?

If it's recorded on an HDD based DVD recorder (tuner box undder the TV thingy) then I've found playback in computer based DVD players can be flakey, if it's a data disc burnt onto the DVD, I'd be surprised if it doesn't work.

I ahve to confess to being a little sceptical of optical recording technologies, I've tended to find them the least relaible storage media, and there does still seem to be a some players like them, some don't etc.

I think it is an older system than that - I think it is just a DVD player which can record to disc, no HDD in place.
