Hi All,

Having ignored an engine oil leak all last year I have finally decided that it needs sorting. It looks like the oil is weeping from the crankshaft seal in the timing cover. Does anyone know how difficult this is to do DIY? I reckon if I take the bonnet off then I will have reasonable access. Will I need a puller to get the pulley off or is it held in place with a woodruff key.

As always, any advice appreciated.

Did this job a few years ago. If you go to my website here

http://www.andrewc.org.uk/tvrgit/jan06.html

there's a complete step-by-step with photos.

I ended up making a puller up, after running around to Halfords etc on the day. If you can buy or borrow a proper bearing puller you'll find it a lot easier. I think there is also a woodruff key IIRC.

Another problem was that my local Ford dealer sold me the wrong seal after taking 5 weeks to get one in, so I had to do the job twice. The second time was a lot easier because I'd had practice!

Oh and another thing - you'll need a hooky tool thing to get the old seal out of the casing. You should be able to do it with a big screwdriver.

I didn't have to remove the bonnet - getting it vertical was good enough, but then I'm young slim and athletic (if you believe that bit, you'll believe anything).

Yep, use a puller to remove the pulley. Lever out the old seal, it's knackered anyway. Fit new seal in place of old seal, you'll need a hammer and metal tube so that you can gently tap it into the timing cover. Take your time with this! The woodruff key locates the pully but it's usually an interferance fit onto the crankshaft that holds it in place. Using a new bolt torque it up to the manual specifications.

Magic. Thanks Guys.

Tvrgit, great photos and instructions. I'll be making one of those tvrgit pullers this weekend.

Cheers...Ralph

One more question. When you came to undoing the large bolt that holds the pulley on how did you stop the engine spinning. Did you just put it in gear?
