That's not to say that a few years down the line they'll change their mind...

Not sure I fancy an M car with a folding metal roof anyway.

Maybe just maybe they will do another coupe in a few years and stick the M3 V8 in there now we're talking!!

It's far more likely that BMW will release a successor to the M1 which is powered by either the S65 or the S85 in the same mould as Audi and its R8 I should think.

It will be a more profitable car than the M-powered variants of the Z3 and Z4, which have only ever sold in relatively low volumes.

This. Immediately.

I actually really like the R8. But I think it's high time (if a bad time, economically speaking) that BMW did it some serious injury with a proper mid-engined tribute to the first M-car.

Amen.

Well it's more likely I should think.

The problem with BMW is Porsche.

Our boys from Munich have yet to create a credible alternative to the original supercar. Now that Audi has had the instructi... sorry, gumption to bring out the R8 to seriously tackle Stuttgart, I see it as only a matter of time before BMW follow suit with a package capable of wiping the smile form Herr Porsche's face.

I guess the problem with a fast coupe/roadster in the £40k bracket is that for 90% of people, there is only one car to have when you reach this sort of liquidity. And dare I say it, the offering from the other side is still the finer steer, if not accompanied by as much wallop.

Bring on the M8(?)

It ain't going to happen for 2-3 years. These cars are NOT Politically Correct. Angela Merkel & Gordon Brown (neither of which have ever driven a car in their lifetime - they are parasites). BMW is in deep st financially & may very well go bust this year without a bailout from the German Government. Nobody is immune.

The R8 is a financial disaster. Why pay £80K+ for a car that will be £50K after 6 months. Financial suicide IMO. Lets see if I am right in June 2009?

There are so many high performance cars out there that can equal an R8 for 1/3 of the cost seconhand.

I do think BMW are having a tough time at the moment. I seem to remember reading that their margins are a lot less than even toyota and honda..nevermind Porsche and Merc

I hope BMW keep producing the best cars/engines!!

I have to say that given what I saw at the Geneva show I have a real sense for BMW of a company that has lost its way.

The newer models all seem to be a bit "bland" or filling niches that don't really exist.

I see problems ahead....
