Picture this... nice windy country road (we have a lot of em). Numpty in front. Me in Chim, feeling impatient. A short straight comes up, nothing coming. Drop down, pull out, foot down to nip past.

OK so far? Fine, until...

Accelerator pedal trapped under newly-replaced carpet mat, which then proceeds to press said accelerator to the floor... Chim takes off like a ing rocket, with sharp bend and junction looming at 120+, still accelerating like stink.

Episode ends with frantic gear disengagement and me standing on brakes, end up pulled into verge, hazards on, with engine screaming, battling to get pedal free from under carpet, while ing numpty sails past smirking...

Best laxative I've taken for a while.

Yep, we're fine... though the engine felt a bit lumpy for the rest of the day (maybe psychological!). Never heard a V8 at 8000 rpm before!

Been there done that, got the T-Shirt
'Playing' with a Bolt On Boy many years ago, had a mate in the passenger seat showing it off, not long after I bought the car, gave it full power, think we were in 2nd, and off we went, pinned to the back of the seat, and no way of slowing down, pop it in neutral, and the engines still screaming, so in a panic, I kill the engine, and coast into a layby, only problem is now I've got no brake servo just stopped by the end of the layby

That reminds me of that Darwin awards for death by stupidity, with the guy that stuck a J-track jet engine off a Harrier onto the back of his Dodge pick up and blasted down a three mile straight... they reckoned he'd hit a terminal velocity of about 320mph by the time he hit the cliff wall at the end of the straight

Good to see you're OK Wedgie, if somewhat ruffled

Me too !!

Just got my new Clio Cup a few months back and thought I'd treat myself to some fancy Carlos Fandango mats.

Going up the M1 and approaching my junction I thought I'd give it a quick squirt around a couple of slower cars before pulling in last minute for the jct which involves a 360 deg looping sliproad.

Guess what happened next...the pedal got stuck under the mat and I panicked and went for the slip, then saw the error of my ways and pulled back out, onto the hard shoulder and undertook about 3-4 cars at this point doing about a ton. The brain was going overtime, what to do ? Stuck it in neutral and managed to unhook the pedal by reaching down and freeing it up.

Ended up carrying on to the next junction but yes, talk about a brown trouser moment.

Wasn't that harrier engineed pick up disaster the one where it took them ages to realise that it wasn't a plane crash, as it was so high up, and the only give away was the massive black streaks on the road which indicated that something wasn't quite right.

Wedgie glad you "held it together".

It was a JATO (jet-assisted take-off unit). After ignition the driver was described as 'largely irrelevant for the remainder of the event...'

Not so sure, I have seen picture evidence of this incident, it is bloody hysterical, I'll see if I can put my hands on it.

The Snopes link I posted is a pretty comprehensive debunk citing various sources including a link to the Arizona Department of Public Safety and a statement from the Arizona Highway Patrol denying the incident happened.

I'm not denying it is a fine story, but I would be surprised if it were fact given the aforementioned thorough debunk.

Does that mean the one about the guy who tied 6 helium weather balloons to his armchair so he could drink his six pack of Bud whilst hovering an anticipated 6 feet above his garden is untrue??? damn - I kinda liked the vision of a guy being reported by air traffic control for floating in an arm chair 2000 feet up in the main approach to LAX international

Cool! the original makes interesting reading.

I particularly like the idea of the air traffic guys face when he suddenly saw a blip on his screen looking like 3 jumbos stacked on top of each other

Just had my first small brown trouser moment this morning. Second gear exiting a bend and a bit too much jungle juice and oooh the rear wheels lit up like rudolph on re-entry,still I tidied it up and carried on my merry way wiser for the experience.
