I am taking a petrol tank for someone to look at tomorrow who has offered to make one up in aluminium. I have 2 tanks, which differ slightly. What I believe are the breather pipes? come out towards different ends of the tank and the sender unit contacts are different. Does it matter which end the pipe comes out? Which style is the better? One is in reasonable condition the other is actually quite good. I assume one is S3 and the other S2? If I do get one made are there any mods that should be incorporated?

I think the pipe is the fuel return so doesn't make any difference which side it goes in at.

The S3 has the return pipe on the opposite end to the filler pipe and the level sender for the S3 is the one with the 3 electrical connections running in a vertical line

Tony

The tank on the right appears to be the S2 tank, identical to mine and the second sender unit is again the same as mine, Steve Reid of Steve Reid Classics thegamekeeper is/has been discussing getting some stainles steel tanks made. Might be worth speaking to him.

Not my S3. Return pipe same side as filler and single contact on sender, it's a TVR thing.

What a surprise headache - inconsitency in deign hehe. I assume yours must be an early S3 s that sender unit (thre tree electrical connection one) type is the last one used I am led to believe. Mine is a 1992 car

Thanks gents. No absolute need to change the tank but a friend has offered to do this and the swirl pot for beer tokens. I have read posts about having to paint/treat the inside of the tank and it seems silly not to take him up on his kind offer, especially as it is all currently acceessable.

Norman was Lucy a late S2? there seems to be a few things about her (like the larger ARB) that would point to her being a little younger than some S2's.

A new tank is being made and I mentioned the fact that it takes so long to fill the S tanks with petrol because the pump keeps cutting out due to the back pressure. He suggested that he incorporate a vent to the top of the tank that goes back into the top of the filler pipe to stop this problem.Has anybody got a picture taken up under the body showing how much gap there is over the top of the tank to run a new vent pipe

For what its worth I dont think its back pressure that slows the fillups as much as splashback... Try putting the filler nozzle in upside down with the trigger mechanism inboard and in line with the drivers headrest if you know what I mean... that way, mine goes in without any stop/starts

K wink

Filling is no problem if you turn the pump nozzle round the wrong way - the problem isnt back pressure but the stream of petrol directed down on the internal filler pipe side, if the nozzlle is the 'wrong' way round the petrol stream is directed dowm the middle of the filler pipe, no obstruction no cutting out.
