Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo cam belt change - is it an engine/gearbox/sub frame out job or not?

How difficult is it to do the job?

Can't you just lift the engine out and leave the gearbox in situe?

Is it something a decent DIY mechanic can spend a long time on doing to save the cost?

Or is it best to take it to an independant garage and risk having to trust them. After all, they could just leave the old one in and say they have done it.

Thanks in advance mon amis.

Fiat say engine out, thus a very, very expensive 72k service and loads and loads of 20v Turbos going very, very cheap.

If memory serves me right what you need is the copy of EVO magazine which had quite a large section on 2nd hand Fiat Coupes, and in this section I'm nearly sure a garage specialised in doing the Cambelt without dropping the engine out of the car. I think it was quoted at over £500, but better than over £1k.

Maybe someone with a sizeable EVO collection may be able to source the exact copy. My copies are culled down to only those magazines with TVRs in them.

We did this yesterday !
At an indy: £295 for straight belt change, £495 for belt plus ancilliaries here and lots of other places.
It was quoted as an engine out job when the car was first launched, but a refinement to the procedure got it down to a relatively straightforward job. Around £700 at a main dealer (but you don't wanna do that )
