I have a chipped windscreen in my S3 and I'm deciding whether to get it repaired or replaced. How easy is it to get hold of an S3 'screen? What does it come from?

The other thing is some of the trim around the windscreen has come adrift and I plan to reattach it during the windscreen work. Can anyone recommend a particular type of glue and is there anything to watch out for?

Nope. I know a fellow PHer who has an automotive glass repair business and I'd rather send the job his way. Just wondered if I could simplify things a little by finding out what the donor screen is.

Well I was told, believe it or not, it's a TVR S3 screen... putting lie, yet again, to the urban legend that TVRs are kit cars hehe

Jeez. I stand corrected, assumed it was a bit of old Granada or something. There again I'm a kit car fanatic and I like that sort of thing. smile

Blimey that must be off an old invoice, they haven't used HT codes for at least 10 years.

It's the EuroCode 9255ACL nowadays smile

Thanks.

Does that mean any auto windscreen company would be able to order it with that code?

It depends, most will use the Euro Code, but some might still be using the HT code.

For the record.

9255ACL is a clear windscreen
9255AGN is a green windscreen

There are also codes for a clear screen with green top band ACLGN and green with green top band AGNGN but these will be much harder to find (if there are any)

Chipped mine the day I sold it. irked

Took 6 weeks to get sorted.

It was replaced by Autoglass in Chelmsford, who did a far superior job to the factory effort...

Changing the windscreen on an S is a right pain in the ass.

Make sure that the person undertaking the works has previous knowledge/don one before, as

1.they have to cut the screen out and this can lead to damage to paint work and/or internal trim (take photo's prior to work being undertaken as a record and make sure the people undertking the works are covered for damage caused)
2.installing the screen needs to be just right so the screen sits right..... have heard stories of having to go back as water ingress or roof not fitting properly.... this may have been to a rogue batch of screens though that didn't fit.
3.installing and finishing the Sika bonding (black gunk) so it looks tidy as there is no trim to hide this.

I got mine replaced by the RAC Windscreens in WGC.... (screen sourced elsewhere)... it took them all day as they fitted three times, and to be honest the sika was/is a bit of a mess..... they swore they would never do another for the price they quoted me £50 (install only)

if its only and chip and is repairable i would go down that route...unless the screen has lots of little chips in it which when driving into the sun hampers vision as all you see are stars
