Help!
My sons xbox has trouble reading the discs and before I go and have it repaired I was wondering whether it would recognise an external usb dvd drive?
It's sitting in front of me all plugged up but I dont know how to drive it - and my son is away for a week.
Is there anyone out there who can help. Because I feel like my old grandad trying to navigate xp...

Are you asking if you can use an external USB DVD drive to stick a disc in and play a game?
If so, no you can't, definitely not.
My disk drive has recently failed. The info I've gleaned is the only way to fix it is to replace the entire drive. You then have to get the new drive flashed with the ID key from your old drive for it to work, this is a bit complicated and needs doing by someone with the know how, which I don't have!
The other option is to buy a new (or used, but working) drive off Ebay, make sure it's the same model as your existing. Take the drive apart and swap out the circuit board from your existing one into the new one, should work and really dead easy. I'me waiting for my new drive to arrive, paid £15 on Ebay.
Other option is to buy a new Xbox or find a local geek that will do the above for you.

Having now looked at the xbox I can't even see how to take it apart! It's "almost" worth buying another one just for the drive

Just to confirm. Replacing your DVD drive is a piece of pi$$.
Take your Xbox to bits.
Remove DVD drive and note the make.
Buy a replacement off Ebay
Swap the main circuit board from yours to the replacement
Reassemble
It works.....my new DVD drive arrive today and it's up and running no bother...all for £15
