I'm sitting here with the window open, and I heard the tinny noise of a mobile phone - it sounded close enough to be in the driveway, so I thought I'd pop my head out to see what was going on, just in case.

I saw on the pavement what looked like a girl of about 17-18 years of age, staring gormlessly at a mobile phone while it rang and rang. From a distance I guess it could be totally mistaken for a human being, but the obvious lack of higher mental functions (a normal human being would just answer the phone, surely) marks this out as something different.

I have seen many of these creatures in town centres and particularly supermarkets. Sometimes even behind the wheel of cars. (Although I'm not sure of the legality of this, it looks to be quite unsafe.)

What are they?

Can you buy them in pet shops? Could you, say, train one to do basic tasks such as laundry? Are they happy sleeping outdoors in a kennel or would I need something more complicated? What do they eat?

It strikes me that if whatever these things are happen to be relatively cheap to buy and house, and could be trained to perform basic household tasks, it would save quite a lot of time for me. While stupid, they seem to me to be quite plentiful, so it won't matter when they electrocute themselves with the hoover or wander off and get lost somewhere while doing the gardening, as I could just get another one.

Has anybody ever kept one as a pet? I know about cats and dogs and that sort of thing, but as these seem to be some sort of ape thing I wanted to check with the collective wisdom of Pistonheads.

I think your best bet would be to go and buy a blunderbuss and put the poor thing out of it's misery.

Unfortunately they are not able to be domesticated.
