Just been reading about the new 3.0 diesel in the XF - in 'S' guise it produces 275bhp and 443lb-ft of torque resulting in 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds. It's also very competitively priced compared to a 535d with a choice of trim levels starting from £36k.

I think I might go and try one next week as I'm doing a lot of business miles now. Anyone tried one yet?

It's on the Jaguar webpage configurator thingy, so I assume you can now buy them.

Afraid I havent driven one, but they are very highly rated. If you do test drive will be intersted to hear what you think.

Auto Express and Car have just done a review.

To be honest it sounds like a cracking engine. I'd love this in an XK.

A colleague drove one last week, aswell as the XFR. He said both were mighty impressive. The 3.0d S is a bit special too.

i seem to be wrong ..!!

After speaking with a couple of jaguar dealers around me i cannot get atest drive as "the car is open for ordering but at this time we do not have access to any demo's"

Ghey..

from reading the reviews it looks to be an extremely good engine to match a fantastic vehicle!

Only driven a 2.7d and the SV8.

The SV8 was awesome (obviously) but I didn't really feel the 2.7d lacking too much, so I think the 3.0d could be quite special. Let us know how you get on when you get your hands on one.

I have just bought a 3.0d S Portfolio. I have had Mercs for years but having driven one on Saturday I ordered it today. Got a great deal (I think) when I added up the equivelent spec on a Merc CLS 320 it came to just short of £70k!!! the Jag came in at £42k (with a bit of haggling) So please dont all rush out a buy one as I dont want to see loads of t hem on the road.

I drove a XF 3.0D S yesterday, an XFR the day before and an SV8 (owned an S Type R a few years back).

I opted and have just bought the SV8 (which, on a 58 plate, fully loaded and only 6k miles, was 24k cheaper than the XFR). Get it next tuesday.

Ok, so here's how I see it:

XFR was sensationally good. Handling is quite unbelievable; turn-in is excellent, minimal roll and in dynamic mode with the paddles is blindingly quick 30-90. Was mulling a 996 TT last week and this is not far off for relentless shove. However, it was 60k plus a few options and brand new so, although tempted, ultimately declined (for now).

The 3.0 Diesel S was great, for a diesel. And if I'd been doing big miles it would have been a no brainer. It's extremely smooth, quiet and obviously has huge torque. However, it never really feels that quick and there's a fair bit of lag and slack on the throttle. Ride and body control is simply not as good as the XFR or the SV8 which have active suspension.

SV8 for me was a great compromise. Let's face it, 420bhp isn't shabby, and this one was quite a bargain. Midnight, charcoal interior, fully loaded and only 6k miles, 2.5 year's warranty, and 37k. Sure it's not quite as sharp as the XFR, the seats aren't as supportive (especially laterally), but it's still devilishly quick.

The XF in general, has been a revelation to me. Hadn't even sat in one until Tuesday and bought one yesterday, so suffice to say was extremely impressed. The ride is peerless, refinement is uncanny, interior is just brilliant and yet, in dynamic mode wiuth the paddles it can really hustle. There's soo much grip and grunt and the steering provides really good feel and feedback for such a big beast. Oh the boot is cavernous and the seats fold down. Only slight drawback is that the headroom in the rear is marginal if you're over 6ft 2

Looking forward to picking her up...

I drove both the 3.0 diesel and 3.0 diesel S. The standard diesel was quick, the diesel S was astonishing. One poster says it didn't feel that quick. Blimey, what does he drive normally then ? A Formula 1 car ?
The xf diesel S is amazingly rapid and has an urgency at all speeds.

I've driven both the XFR and 3.0D S on the road and track. XFR is a superb car. One of the best I have driven. The diesel Jag in S spec is the best diesel I have driven. The performance and sheer enjoyment from driving this car were second to none. I would buy one at the drop of a hat.

Try and get a test drive. You will be impressed.

I drove one last year when i was trying things from my E39 M5,

Its a brilliant car and the shove ingear was more than the M5, it felt taught and very special. Cant compare it to a 535d, havent driven one - its just nicer and you get more freebies - it also holds money better....

I will own one, one day its just at the moment they are holding the money.....

a 9/10 - a 10/10 if it had a V8 petrol.....
